My friend also entered a project into Michaels Handmade Holiday Contest and I have been helping her get ratings. Entrants are encouraged to get as many ratings on their project as they can. However, we now believe this is a sham. Case in point: both Week Three winners had 700 and 300 "four snowmen" ratings. The leader (Tuesday) had over 13,000 "five snowmen" ratings and did not get selected. I know ratings are only part of the score, but there are many entries, including my friend's, that had more and higher ratings than the Week Three winners selected. This seems to communicate to us that ratings are not significant (if considered at all) in selecting a winner. I wrote inquiry@michaels.com about this, but I have received no reply. We think this contest is unfair and should be boycotted.

Hello Sherry, Thank you for taking the time to post a reply to my blog. Funny….at my 9yr. olds urging we visited the Michael’s website to view his bookmark project. We were happy to see that others had rated it w/o being prompted to do so. We were also surprised to see some of the past weeks winners. We thought it was strange that those projects had been selected as winners too. We both think the contest is not at all what we thought it was and feel like it was some sort of ‘gotcha’. If we had it to do over, we would not have submitted the entry. Doesn’t seem quite fair but perhaps Michaels will change the rules in the future? Happy Holidays! Kay

I looked for your son's entry, but couldn't find it in the 200 pages of entries. I was curious and thought I might enter a project but changed my mind after a look at the entries, ratings and rules. Contrary to the rules that encourage entrants to collect a lot of ratings because they are supposed to be significant to determine a winner, the ratings don't seem to matter at all. I just looked at the newest (week 4) winners: One is a "JOY" plaque currently with 319 "4 snowmen" ratings, the other is a mistletoe scarf currently with 13... that's right ... thirteen "four snowmen" ratings! Are you kidding me? I found fourteen entrants with over a thousand ratings, the leader has 27,000 "five snowmen" ratings. And these lost to a entry with 13 "four snowmen" ratings? The way winners are picked seems a bit random to me. I'd be happy if they just followed their published rules.

Hello Michelle, Thank you for taking the time to read and post a message on my blog. You can search BOOKMARK on the Michael’s website to view the bookmark entries and there you will see Jonathan’s bookmark project. I agree with you….The contest doesn’t seem quite right. Now, I think retailers and service providers should avoid any sort of impropriety and always strive to be fair minded, direct and honest. Especially now when money is scarce and nerves are frayed. I always try to put myself in the position of my clients and anticipate their needs and avoid surprises. Especially when those surprises could cost them money. Entering this contest was an effort in encouraging my 4th grader to be an entrepreneur. We never expected to win anything. I guess that was a good position to take so we are not disappointed now. I wish you and your family a happy holiday season. Thanks for reading my blog.
