2010 Great Road Trip Scavenger Hunt

Posted to Area Attractions, Kathy Mardiros

The 2010 Great Road Trip Scavenger Hunt is underway! Whether you are traveling abroad this summer or taking short “staycations” the Scavenger Hunt might be something of interest to you. A friend of mine and I will be starting our hunt this weekend. Another friend liked the idea and while on vacation last week found 7 of the 20 items!

It is easy to play. There are 20 items that need to be found but they cannot be in Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Benito, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, San Francisco, San Mateo or Solano Counties. Find the item and take a photo of one of your team members with the item. Caption each photo with the names of the people in the photo, city, state and/or country where you found the item – photos without captions are eliminated.

Read the contest rules at
http://www.mercurynews.com/travel-headlines/ci_15260643. There will be winners in each category such as most items found, most creative scavengers, all in the family, best road trippers, made the judges laugh and wildcards.

Some of the items on the list sound easy to find and others will take some creative thinking. Sound like Fun? Why not get a team together and give it a try?

July 4th at the Alameda County Fair

Posted to Area Attractions, Kathy Mardiros

For the last dozen years my sister and I have attended the Alameda County Fair on the 4th of July. This year my sister and I went as usual and a friend joined us. What a lovely day - not too hot - sunny with a light breeze. Here you will read about some of our favorite things to do at the county fair.

Visiting the photography and art exhibits. We always pick our favorites and they are usually not the ones that win the various awards. This year there were some lovely paintings and photographs but it seemed as though fewer items were sold than in other years.

Then we visit the landscaping exhibits. It always amazes me the work that goes into the various displays. I took a photo of the winning exhibit - it truly was my favorite. Remember the plant sale is always the last day of the fair - so this year it is July 11th. Friends have attended and told me they get some good deals and you have until the next day to pick up what you have purchased.

We also visited a number of the exhibit halls to see what they had available. We did not have time to visit the animals but usually that is on our agenda. We will again next year.

My favorite is the horse races. This year I broke even - better than some years. My sister had the winner of the last race so she ended up ahead. The mule races are always fun as you never know what the mules will do once the gate opens - we have seen them buck off the jockeys, run sideways and just stop! I did pick a couple of winners and with the walking ring close by you can see the horses up close before the race.

On our way out we stopped to watch the mutton busting. Children under 6 sign up and try to ride a sheep for 6 seconds. Was fun to watch the kids try to hold on. One little boy aged 3 rode twice! A new event at the fair and a crowd favorite.

The fair continues this week Wednesday through Sunday - there is no horse racing on Wednesday. If you are looking for something to do - take a drive to Pleasanton and visit the Alameda County Fair - it is well worth it.

Sonoma Horse Park

Posted to Area Attractions, Kathy Mardiros

This last week I was able to attend the horse show at the Sonoma Horse Park to watch some of my barn mates compete. The Sonoma Horse Park is Northern California’s newest horse show facility and is conveniently located to anyone living in Northern California. The facility comprises 30 acres on the banks of the Petaluma River and features 9 rings and is adjacent to the Riverside Equestrian Center.

The facility is lovely and the rings well manicured. I found the facility well laid out and meticulously maintained.

Hunter Ring at Sonoma Horse Park

I was impressed as the rings are large and the footing good. I was there on Friday and watched classes in all the rings. In the Grand Prix ring for example the first line was 11 or 12 strides! From my years of showing in the past, I don’t think I ever had a line of 11 or 12 in one of my jumper classes!

Upcoming show dates: Equestrian Classic July 27 – August 1, Giant Steps Charity August 4 – 8, San Francisco Classic August 18 – 22, August Classic August 25 – 29, September Classic September 8 – 12 and Strides and Tides September 15 – 19.

If you are a hunter or jumper enthusiast or just like to watch, consider attending one of the horse shows at the Sonoma Horse Park. For more information on the horse park go to www.sonomahorsepark.com.

Entertainment Venue - Fox Theater Oakland, CA

Posted to Area Attractions, Pam Dakan

I was lucky enough to get a last minute ticket to a concert last Thursday night at the Fox Theater in Oakland . The lead singer from the band Radiohead, absolutely one of my fave bands, Thom Yorke, has a side project, Atoms for Peace. The group consists of Thom Yorke, on vocals, piano, and guitar, Flea, the bassist from The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich on keyboards and guitar, and Joey Waronker on drums, who has played with Beck, R.E.M, Smashing Pumpkins and Elliot Smith to name a few, and lastly, Mauro Refosco playing percussion and drums.

This was my first time watching a performance at the Fox, and I was impressed. It has been completely renovated and re-opened in February of 2009. The theater had been closed since 1966! The venue itself is intimate, with a capacity for about 1500 to 2800 people.

It is breathtakingly beautiful inside, with ornate ceilings, two gold statues with glowing eyes on either side of the stage.

There is a main bar and also a Lounge called The Den, with beautiful ceilings and décor, comfortable couches, a small menu consisting of Olives, Cheeses, a Charcuterie plate, Smoked Salmon Rillettes, and Chips and Dip, and some interesting drink choices, such as the Mr.T (Gosling’s Black Seal Rum, Blood Orange, Pomegranate, Ginger Ale and Lime), or the Great Scott (Silver Tequila, Tangerine, Pear and Lime).

The band played for about 90 minutes, and was totally brilliant. The sound was sharp, I wasn’t too far from the stage so I had a good view of them. I rocked out with the rest of the crowd.

The Fox is available for private events, and they use Global Gourmet Catering as part of their package; “the first and only large scale green certified caterer in Northern California .”

Tickets for shows are usually available through the Fox Theater Website, from Ticketmaster, or the box office. You can also call 1-800-745-3000. The Fox is an all ages venue, and is easy to get to by BART ( 19th Street /Broadway). The address is 1807 Telegraph Avenue , Oakland , CA 94612.

I didn’t have much trouble parking, there were a couple of large parking garages nearby. Beware, though, some of them close by 11.00pm , so if you plan on being out later, make sure you check the times before parking.

Horses in the East Bay

Posted to Area Attractions, Kathy Mardiros

Someone asked me the other day about keeping a horse in the San Francisco East Bay. As a horse owner myself, I replied that it all depends on what you desire for your horse.

There are communities and areas in the East Bay where you can purchase land and have a horse on your own property. There are boarding stables in almost every area and the level of care will range from full service show barn to a co-op do it yourself option or something in between.

For those looking to trail ride there are wonderful trails through the East Bay Regional Park system – go to www.ebparks.org to download information on the various parks and trails. For those looking to show, there are full care training facilities for every discipline – dressage, hunter/jumper, eventing and western riding. Several of the facilities have recognized and/or schooling shows throughout the year and many have resident trainers on site or visiting on a regular basis.

A lot of information can be found on the Bay Area Equestrian Network web site.

So if you are thinking of where you and your horse could live, consider the East Bay. While you won’t find acres of green pastures with white board fences like you would see in Kentucky, you will find a variety of options with friendly horse people who can talk to you about living with horses in the East Bay. Or give me a call at 925-287-0550 or send an email at kmardiros@legacyrealestateassociates.com and I will try to help you find the best option for you and your horse!

Bikram Yoga in Fremont, CA

Posted to Area Attractions, Pam Dakan

There is an excellent Bikram Yoga studio in Fremont. Bikram is not for everyone, certainly not the faint hearted. But the health benefits of this practice are amazing. I just recently got back to class after a hiatus for a year, and remembered how great I feel when I go regularly.

In practicing Bikram, the room temperature is heated to about 105 degrees. This, contrary to popular belief, actually prevents the body from overheating, and allows for your muscles to be protected from very deep stretching, and opens your pores so you can sweat out all toxins in your body. There are 26 poses that are each done twice; a warm up series, a balancing series, and a floor series. Each posture and breathing exercise is designed to work every part of your body, literally, every single ligament, tendon and muscle!

The benefits of Bikram are amazing. The stretching and balancing is a part of it, so is creating pressure to your veins and arteries. When the pressure is released, the arteries and veins are flushed out. It’s good for all the major joints in your body, preventing arthritis, good for your internal organs, anxiety, depression, and hormonal balance to name a few.

My life is hectic. I am a single mom to 2 boys, I run a full time real estate business and that can be stressful. Bikram Yoga makes me feel calm, centered, focused, and relaxed.

It is good to at least double your intake of water and not eat anything 2-3 hours before a class. You need to wear clothes are not restricting. I try to go to Bikram at least 3 times per week. It is a 90 minute class. I feel less stressed, healthy, flexible, and my skin looks great!

Fremont’s Bikram Yoga studio was just voted Best Yoga Studio by Fremont Bulletin readers. It is located at 43528 Fremont Blvd., Fremont, CA 94538, if you feel like giving it a go!

IRVINGTON HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER FUNDRAISER

Posted to Area Attractions, Pam Dakan

My son Anthony played Junior Varsity soccer for Irvington High School for the last few months and they had their big fundraiser for the year, the 31st Annual Crab Feed! Parents donated baskets for the big raffle.

We made a Movie Night Theme, filled with goodies, Orange Crème Soda, Milk Duds, Blockbuster movie rental gift cards, popcorn, pretty much everything you would need for a great night in with movies. I get my baskets from the Gourmet Gift Horse, a company on the Peninsula. They do such a great job when I order gift baskets for my clients. I have personalized ribbon with them and I can use them as promotional items as well!

I helped with checking in people for the first hour – I saw parents I hadn’t seen in years, back from when my son played at Warm Springs Little League. I had no idea there would such a great turnout! I think there were over 400 people that came!

The kids all helped serving, wearing their soccer shirts, and were hustling to get everyone what they needed, be it carafes of unlimited wine, or salad, followed by spaghetti. It was all quite good, however, it was my first crab feed and I wasn’t as prepared as some of the veterans that have obviously been to a few crab feeds. I mean, parents bought home prepared cocktail sauce, fondue sets, and their own bottles of wine, as well as crab cracking tools! It was great! The crab was plentiful. I think I ate enough crab to see me through until next season!

Bill Aboumrad, my boss at Legacy Real Estate & Associates came with his whole family! It was nice to see support from my brokerage. Thanks Bill! Marie Rice, my office mate also came and supported the event.

It was fun, and I’ll sure be helping out again next year!

Livermore - wineries, rodeo and much more

Posted to Area Attractions, Kathy Mardiros

Livermore is becoming a destination location for those looking for a quiet affordable community in which to live as well as a tourist destination due to the many amenities and events occurring throughout the year. The downtown area has been revitalized receiving the 2009 Great American Main Street Award from the National Trust for Historic Preservation. This is the first city west of the Mississippi to achieve the award. It is fun to stroll along First Street and experience the neighborhood boutiques and restaurants.

Livermore also boasts a vibrant wine country. Presently there are over 4000 acres planted with over 50 wineries operating from those such as Wente and Concannon which have been in operation for over 126 years to small boutique wineries just starting out. Many have tasting rooms either at the winery itself or in the downtown area. Many wineries feature summer concerts and entertainment venues. To find out more about the wineries and special events visit www.lvwine.org .

Working cattle ranches and horse boarding facilities are also found in this historic town. The Livermore Rodeo held the second weekend in June features events such as bull riding, bareback riding, tie down roping, saddle bronc riding, steer wresting, team roping, and barrel racing. Several events lead up to the rodeo and information can be found at www.livermorerodeo.org.

Housing is varied from the older homes in the downtown area to vast ranches in the outlying areas. If you are interested in housing, give me a call at 925-287-0550 or visit our web site at www.legacyrealestateassociates.com and sign up for the Listing Alert. Listing Alert will notify you whenever a property meeting the parameters you enter comes on the market.

Whether you are looking for a place to live or a place to visit, put Livermore on your list of places to consider.

Mt. Diablo Beacon

Posted to Area Attractions, Kathy Mardiros

Located in Contra Costa County, Mt. Diablo is part of the state park system and encompasses approximately 20,000 acres. The main peak rises about 3,864 feet and can be seen throughout the East Bay area. On a clear day (often after a winter storm), you can see for miles and miles – from the Sierra Nevada range to the southern most part of the Cascade Range and even Mt. Lassen more than 180 miles away.

The beacon at the top is normally turned off but every year on December 7th, the beacon is illuminated from sunset until dawn memorializing the attack on Pearl Harbor with a ceremony. Visitors are invited to attend and are urged to arrive by 4 PM. Park and walk to the summit. This is one of the few opportunities where you can view the sunset from the top of Mt. Diablo which is a truly memorable experience.

Hopefully this year the weather will be clear and the light from the beacon will be seen throughout the area. Look toward Mt. Diablo and see if you are able to see the beacon – a truly amazing sight – or better yet plan to visit the park and participate in the ceremony.

Harvest Festival at Historical Ardenwood Farm in Fremont, CA

Posted to Area Attractions

For the past 8 years our family has been visiting the harvest festival at the historic Ardenwood Farm in Fremont, CA. Every year we climb the hay pyramid and slog through the corn maze. We choose the perfect pumpkins for carving. No charge for admission to the pumpkin patch and lots of fun for kids of all ages. Check the website for many other fun family events thru out the year.

It’s helpful to bring your own radio flyer wagon otherwise; you will need to shadow another guest to their car in the parking lot. Pumpkins are inexpensive and its great fun to tramp through the vast field littered with all shapes and sizes to find the perfect pumpkin.

Snack shack offers soda, chips and sweets. You bring the kids and the cash!

Boo!

Moderate Climate – Great Location Think Fremont!

Posted to Area Attractions, Kathy Mardiros

When trying to determine where in the Bay Area to live, Fremont often comes to the top of the list. With a population of approximately 213,000 Fremont is the fourth most populous in the Bay Area and the fifth most populous city in the state. With a moderate climate that takes advantage of Bay breezes, Fremont attracts many of the high tech and bio tech professionals that call the Bay Area home.

The 680 and 880 freeways run parallel to each other and help keep commute traffic flowing at a reasonable pace. Add to that a BART – Bay Area Rapid Transit – station and a stop by the ACE – Altamont Commuter Express – train and those who need to commute out of Fremont have a number of options.

One of the highlights of Fremont is the historic Mission San Jose. This mission founded June 11, 1797 by Father Fermin Francisco de Laseun is the fourteenth of twenty one California Missions. This site is the only mission on the east side of San Francisco Bay. The mission when founded was named “La Mision del Gloriosisimo Patriarch San Jose” in honor of Saint Joseph versus what has often been reported as Mission San Jose de Guadalupe.

A new water park, Aqua Adventure, opened this summer and residents quickly found the park to be a delight for those of all ages. Another Fremont attraction is the Ardenwood Historic Farm. This 205 acre park is part of the East Bay Regional Park system. The lovely Victorian mansion and grounds are the site of numerous weddings and receptions each year. The fruit and vegetable stand right outside the farm entry is open May to October featuring fresh organic produce. The pumpkin patch is open October 1st through Halloween. The park is open year round, but check the web site as not all portions are open every day. The park has an animal farm, horse drawn train, blacksmith ship and an extensive naturalist program.

Fremont boasts top rated schools, two hospitals, numerous parks and recreational facilities. Homes range from more modest older homes to large estates often with Bay and hillside views. Right now inventory is low so visit the Legacy web site at www.legacyrealestateassociates.com and sign up for Listing Alert to be notified when something comes on the market that meets your needs.

WALT DISNEY FAMILY MUSEUM

Posted to Area Attractions

The newest addition to San Francisco’s Presidio is the Walt Disney Family Museum. What an amazing time I had this past weekend visiting (10) permanent galleries, in chronological order covering the history of Walt Disney’s career and lifetime.

There are a lot of photos and family mementos as well as early drawings by Walt in his early years growing up in the mid west. From the doodles you can see the future Mickey Mouse and others. Also on display is a replica of the ambulance Walt drove in France after World War I.

The former barracks that now is the museum has been completely renovated. It sits among other buildings that are in need of new tenants. Those other buildings show the signs of their age to say the least. The views of the Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco Bay are spectacular from the second floor gallery number 8.

I was struck by the primitive drawings that became beloved animated movies like Bambi and Mary Poppins among others. The vision Walt had to imagine these characters leaping into life on the silver screen is to be admired and applauded. Disney was a true genius and trail blazer, believing in his dreams… We can take a lesson from him; believe in your dreams and never give up.

The trip thru each of the (10) galleries was a complete pleasure and had something for everyone, just like Disneyland. There were exhibits for the younger children, too, made at a child’s height. The interiors were beautifully designed and one moved thru each gallery easily and effortlessly.

This museum will be a center for scholarship and discovery. Screenings, lectures, classes and performances will be offered and preformed by the Bay Area’s best musicians.

Wolfgang Puck operates the sumptuous Café and the gift shop has many unique and affordable gifts and souvenirs.

Location, Location, Location...

Posted to Area Attractions

We all know the real estate adage, “location, location, location,” but that can mean so much more than whether your house is on a cul-de-sac or a thoroughfare, or situated downtown or in a sleepy suburb. It can also refer to “location” in a more general sense, that of a region and what it has to offer. Good schools, convenient shopping, nearby parks all make a location more attractive. We are fortunate in the San Francisco Bay Area to have the added benefit of a superb location for those things that add to the enjoyment of life: arts, entertainment, and activities. One has only to search Google to begin to see the richness and diversity of the many cultural activities at your disposal. Pick any category (theatre, dance, music, movies, art) and you can find dozens of events to choose from.

For example, did you know that the San Francisco Bay Area is home to some of the great art museums in the country? San Francisco has the newly rebuilt DeYoung Museum, The Palace of Legion of Honor, Academy of Science/Steinhart Aquarium and the Museum of Modern Art among many others, but there are more even closer to home. We also have the Cantor Museum at Stanford University, the DeSaisset Museum at Santa Clara University, the San Jose Museum of Art, the Oakland Museum, and the Triton Museum of Art in Santa Clara. You can find museums and performing groups online at www.artsopolis.com. Check it out and see just how great your “location” can be.

It’s a good life!

OH BY THE WAY... my goal is to provide the very best counsel, advice and service possible for your real estate needs. If I may ever be of service to you, a relative, or colleague please don’t hesitate to call me at 510-676-2731 with their name and number. I look forward to the opportunity to cater to your real estate needs!

San Francisco’s Legion of Honor Museum

Posted to Area Attractions

Do You Love What You Cannot Afford? Then the current show at San Francisco’s Legion of Honor Museum is for you!! Now thru May 31, 2009, see the fabulous exhibition of “Artistic Luxury” featuring works by Faberge’, Tiffany and Lalique.

At the 1900 World’s Fair in Paris, Faberge’, Tiffany and Lalique showed simultaneously. That exhibition explores how the designers responded to the demand for luxury goods in the years leading up to World War I.

I was stunned by the beauty and grace of the luxurious and tender hearted Faberge’ Eggs were. Czar Nicholas II commissioned Faberge’ to create two Easter Eggs for his mother and his beloved wife the Czarina Alexandra. Each one held a special surprise inside. For me, the most touching was the egg with the portrait of the Czarina’s adored son the Grand Duke Alexei.

After the fall of imperial Russia, one of the Faberge’ eggs was sold to Prince Rainier of Monaco and given to his beloved Princess Grace (Kelly). This egg was also working a clock which she kept on her desk. After her sudden accidental death, the grief stricken Prince Rainier shut those private rooms of his Princess for 30 years. This egg is now on ‘loan’ for us to see and admire in this wonderful show.

The Iris Brooch by Tiffany circa 1900-1901 made of pink tourmalines, demantoid garnet and set in platinum. I imagined how it would look on a simple black cocktail dress…what a dream!

This exhibition is organized by the Cleveland Museum of Art.

Location:
Lincoln Park, San Francisco
100 34th Avenue
Tuesday-Sunday 9:30am-5:15pm
www.legionofhonor.org
Tel: 415-750-3600

Admission:
Adults: $20; Seniors 65 and over: $17; Youths 13-17 and college students w/ ID: $16
Museum admission is FREE for members and children 12 and under. BTW, a family membership is $170 per year and is partnered w/ San Francisco’s DeYoung Museum in Golden Gate Park. Where on June 27th the King Tut show opens! You get free admission to both museums w/ one membership! What a terrific deal.

Oh, parking is FREE at the Legion of Honor.

Dining at the museum is really great! On today’s visit I had a sumptuous salad of smoked salmon, with brioche, capers, butter lettuce leaves and deviled eggs garnished with caviar. A delicious paring in light of the recent holiday and the Faberge’ Eggs I had just seen. I shared the best B.L.T. w/ my guest, Rosalie Wilson, Board President of the Triton Museum of Art in Santa Clara, CA. That sandwich had roasted heirloom tomatoes, crisp apple wood cured bacon on toasted homemade white bread. Honestly, I have NEVER been disappointed with a meal at the Legion Café! Simply superb, right down to the china the artfully designed/prepared food is presented on. On the pricy side, but after all, you are dining in one of the cities most beautiful buildings right down the road from Sea Cliff and some of the most expensive real estate in Northern California.

Tips for a successful visit to the new California Academy of Sciences Museum

Posted to Area Attractions

Here are a few tips for a successful visit to the new California Academy of Sciences Museum in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park. This is the only place where you can visit an aquarium, planetarium and a natural history museum all under one living roof.

  1. First buy your tickets on line and print them at home. Plan to visit Mon-Thurs. Visit www.calacademy.org for more details.

  2. Travel by public transportation and get discounted admission OR park in the underground lot off Fulton @ 10th Avenue. Entrance to the museum is 10 paces from the top of the stairs.

  3. Get there 30 minutes BEFORE the Academy opens (9:30am-5pm)

  4. Make sure you get into the correct line if you have already purchased your tickets.

  5. Once inside grab a Visitor Map and directly ahead to the Planetarium and get your tickets for the free show. The first one is at 10:30am. It is FABULOUS! The voice over is by Sigourney Weaver and is not to be missed. The show runs 30 minutes. The tickets to the entire days shows are offered in the morning and go FAST!

  6. Once you have your tickets in hand, head to the second floor for your free tickets to the 3-D Bug Show. This show is WONDERFUL and runs 30 minutes. The voice over is by Dame Judy Dench AKA M in James Bond. A terrific show about a Preying Mantis and a Butterfly. I reported no nausea or dizziness! My third grader loved it too!

This is such a popular place it fills up quickly and lines can be daunting if you do not plan ahead. On the visitor map note the locations of the restrooms, you may need to have an alternate choice if you are with young children that have a dire need.

There are 3 choices in food outlets. The Moss Room, a sit down full service restaurant and the Academy Café, a more casual cafeteria type of restaurant w/ lots of choices. Both are pricy, but the food is very good and the lines move quickly. You may also plan a picnic too. That would work well also.

There are several museum stores and there is something for everyone at reasonable prices.

We intend to return in 6 more months, by then we figure the novelty will have worn out and we will endure a thinner crowd. All in all the admission $24.95 for adults and $14.95 for kids seemed like a great value.

OH, don’t miss my review on the King Tut exhibit at San Francisco’s DeYoung Museum this summer!

It’s a good life!

Concerts at Wente Vineyards

Posted to Area Attractions, Kathy Mardiros

The line up for the 2009 summer season of concerts at Wente Vineyards has just been announced. Tickets go on sale this Sunday, April 11th for Entertainment Club members and April 26th for the general public. Each year several of the performances sell out early so if you see an artist you would especially like to see purchase tickets right away.

Several options are available from dining in the restaurant and then moving outdoors to attend the concert, buffet dining or just come for the concert. Gates open at 6 PM and the concert starts at 8:15.

This is an enjoyable evening and one my husband and I look forward to each year – we are still deciding which artists we want to see this year. We purchase tickets for the buffet dining and have a relaxing meal and then truly enjoy a concert under the starts. Most years evenings have been warm but one year the weather turned and jackets were needed as once the sun set it got quite cold.

What could be more fun that getting a group together for a great evening in the Livermore wine country?
